2ND GRADE The basketball program in Allendale begins in the 2nd grade. An instructional clinic is held once a week on Wednesday nights beginning January 6,2010 and running through March from 6-7:15. Rather than playing competitive basketball games, the purpose of the clinics is to teach the fundamental skills and rules of basketball. A good amount of time is spent on shooting techniques, dribbling and learning the team concept. As the season progresses and skills improve, scrimmage type games are played. This is a coed program. Boys and girls participate together in the clinics.
3RD & 4TH GRADE Third and fourth graders play together and actual teams are formed. There are separate boys and girls teams. Games are played on Saturdays in a league with Hohokus/Saddle River. The season begins with team practices in December, games are played January 9,2010 through March 6,2010. Although actual games are played, the purpose here is still to learn the basics of the game and team concepts in a fun environment.
GRADES 5 THROUGH 8 Fifth and sixth graders play on combined teams and seventh and eighth graders play on combined teams. There are separate boys and girls leagues for the 5-6 grade and 7-8 grade divisions. The league is comprised of teams from Allendale, Upper Saddle River and Hohokus/Saddle River and teams will play games in all of these towns. Teams are formed in November when players are drafted onto teams. Team practices are held in December and league play begins the 1st week in January. The season culminates with a single elimination playoff tournament. Championship Saturday is held the third Saturday in March in which the boys and girls champions are decided for the 5-6 and 7-8 grade divisions. We have had a great deal of success with this program with a very high level of interest by our kids. Games are competitive and the playoffs are exciting and intense with championship games drawing a large audience.
